In a richly furnished parlour of Mrs. Turholm’s manor, the early stirrings of a national education project unfold. Kantor Niilo Riutta and his former student Hanna Sommar debate the feasibility of a people’s school while confronting the vested interests of assessor Gabriel Grasman, whose political clout threatens to divert funds to private coffers. Their conversation reveals a generation caught between idealistic hope and the pragmatic obstacles of a rapidly modernising society.
The personal histories of the characters intertwine with the public debate: Hanna, now older and more resolute, challenges Niilo’s lingering affection and his doubts about progress, while Niilo wrestles with his own sense of failure and lingering promises. Meanwhile, the manipulations of Grasman and the expectations of the Turholm family cast a shadow over the reform, highlighting the gender and class tensions of the era. As the first act closes, listeners are left with a vivid portrait of a community striving for enlightenment amid competing loyalties.
