About the author

Born Aksel Wilho Hoffrén and later known as Wilho Soini, he lived from 1854 to 1934 and was part of an important generation in Finnish literary life. In his early years he wrote fiction and drama, and later sources describe him as one of the early Finnish realist writers.

His career reached well beyond literature. He worked for the newspaper Uusi Suometar first as a journalist and later in a management role, then served on the board of Kansallis-Osake-Pankki. He was also involved in founding the Finnish Writers' Union and worked for many years as its treasurer, showing how closely he was connected to Finland's cultural institutions as well as its public life.

Soini's work is now mostly remembered through older Finnish editions and digital archives, including titles such as Kaarlo Tiira and Valoa kansalle. A surviving portrait from 1878 also helps preserve the image of a writer whose life bridged literature, journalism, and civic work in a changing Finland.
