Sopu Sammal is a lanky office clerk whose mornings are a comic cascade of snoozes and scrambled attempts to make it to work on time. After a string of stern warnings, his boss begrudgingly hands him a modest sum to buy a proper alarm clock, hoping the simple gadget will curb his habitual tardiness. With nervous optimism, Sopu scours a nearby shop and comes away with a modest, second‑hand timepiece.
Back home, the new clock proves to be more mischievous than reliable; it stops, rattles, and even seems to summon an unintended chorus of distant knocks and clatters from the building. Sopu’s frantic tinkering—shaking the clock, hiding it under pillows, pulling every hidden lever—only intensifies the clamor, turning his modest apartment into a stage for a peculiar urban symphony. The escalating noise draws bemused reactions from neighbors on both sides of the street, each interpreting the disturbance in their own way.
The opening story blends gentle satire with vivid snapshots of 1920s Helsinki life, capturing the absurdity that can arise from everyday objects and small bureaucratic pressures. Listeners are treated to a warm, humor‑laden portrait of a man wrestling with a stubborn clock while the city hums around him, setting the tone for a collection of similarly quirky vignettes.
