Description

In a time when the dense Finnish woods were both home and hardship, a generation of “forest Finns” faces mounting pressures from foreign authorities, dwindling resources, and bitter feuds with neighboring settlers. Young Erkki, hardened by imprisonment and the loss of his friends, clings to a fragile hope as he watches his community’s way of life crumble under taxes, forced labor and the threat of extermination. With his steadfast companion Stina beside him, he begins to dream of a place where the forest’s bounty might finally be theirs alone.

That dream leads them to the promise of a distant colony on the banks of the Delaware, a land the Swedish crown advertises as free of taxes and rich with opportunity. As they prepare to leave their native Vermlann, the pair confront the uneasy blend of excitement and fear that accompanies any voyage into the unknown. Their journey marks the first step of a perilous trek toward a new world, where survival will depend as much on courage and unity as on the skills they have honed in the shadowed haunts of their homeland.
