About the author

Born in Nurmes in 1871, he was a Finnish journalist, writer, diplomat, and politician who originally used the name Axel Gustaf Leonard Järnefelt before adopting the name Akseli Rauanheimo in 1906. He spent important periods of his life in the United States and Canada, experiences that shaped much of his writing and public work.

Rauanheimo is especially associated with books about Finns in North America, including Suomalaiset Amerikassa and later Kanadan-kirja. His writing focused on migration, settlement, and everyday Finnish communities abroad, making him a valuable guide to the history of Finnish immigrant life.

Alongside his literary work, he also served in public life as a member of Finland's Diet and Parliament and later worked as a consul. He died in Montreal in 1932, leaving behind a body of work that connects Finland with the wider story of Finns overseas.
