Description

In the cramped fo’c’sle of a Union warship, a seventeen‑year‑old seaman named Dave steps aboard for the first time and instantly finds himself at odds with a hulking gunner. Their sharp tongues and bruising bravado set the tone for a ship where survival often depends on quick wit as much as on muscle. As the tension rises, another young sailor, Rooney, intervenes, offering an uneasy truce that hints at deeper loyalties among the crew.

Dave’s stubbornness and the gunner’s relentless bullying quickly draw the attention of the ship’s officers, who must decide whether to discipline the quarrel or keep the boys focused on the looming threat of battle. Meanwhile, the cramped quarters reveal personal histories—lost families, hometown expectations, and the bitter pull of a nation at war—that shape each man’s demeanor. Listeners are invited into the raw, salty atmosphere of 1860s naval life, feeling the clang of iron, the creak of timber, and the uneasy camaraderie that can turn foes into allies.
