The story opens in a smoky Fifth Avenue casino, where the narrator watches his younger brother, Harry, spiral into a desperate gamble. Amid the clatter of roulette wheels and the hush of tense onlookers, Harry confesses a loss of ninety‑thousand dollars, his face ashen and eyes wild. Feeling both protective and embarrassed, the narrator steps in, taking his brother’s seat at the table in a bid to steady the situation. The scene establishes a world of high stakes, fraternal obligation, and a restless desire for something beyond the glittering but hollow glamour of the city.
That restless yearning soon pulls the pair out of Manhattan and onto a train bound for South America, where rumors of a hidden Inca treasure and a remote mountain village beckon. Along the journey they encounter colorful characters—a charismatic guide, a skeptical diplomat, and locals who speak of ancient curses—hinting at dangers that are both physical and moral. As the Andes loom, the brothers must decide whether to chase fortune or confront the shadows that have already begun to haunt them.

Best known for creating Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin, this American mystery writer built one of detective fiction’s most enduring partnerships. His stories mix sharp dialogue, clever plotting, and a wonderfully eccentric sense of character.
