Description

In a quiet Japanese garden, little Umé awaits the annual bloom of a plum tree that has marked every birthday for a decade. On the eve of her eleventh year she offers a heartfelt prayer to Benten Sama, promising an hour of koto practice if a single blossom appears. The night is frosty and the buds remain tightly closed, leaving the child to wrestle with disappointment while holding onto a quiet resolve.

When morning arrives, Umé rushes to the tree only to find the branches barren, her hope dimming like the gray sky. Suddenly her mother brings in a vase brimming with fresh white plum blossoms, a gift from Umé’s father, and the room fills with sunlight. The sudden beauty lifts the girl’s spirits, rekindling her love for music and family, and sets the stage for the tender lessons she will learn about perseverance, gratitude, and the gentle rhythms of everyday life.
