The story opens on the windswept cliffs of a Scottish stronghold, where the sea crashes against stone and a band of children and young women fill the lofty battlements with song and play. Eleanor, a bright‑eyed dreamer, and her sister Jean, practical yet restless, watch the horizon while their cousin Margaret, a gentle harpist, hums an old lament. Their conversations turn from memories of a lost father to the tantalising possibility of a brighter future beyond the cold northern hills.
When word arrives that Sir Patrick’s party will travel to France, the girls imagine a court of chivalry, poetry, and possible matches that might lift them from their penniless state. They picture Margaret rising to queen‑like stature and themselves finding love among knights, hoping the promised land will bring both adventure and security. Yet the path to that distant court is fraught with uncertainty, and the sisters must decide whether to cling to the familiar walls of Dunbar or set sail toward an unknown destiny.
