Description

The volume follows a determined early‑19th‑century expedition that sets out to chart the hidden waterways of southern Australia. Beginning in November 1829, the party pushes across the Breadalbane and Yass plains, mapping the tangled courses of the Morumbidgee and its tributaries while noting soil, climate and the region’s natural resources. The narrative blends meticulous scientific observation with the palpable excitement of discovering a landscape that few Europeans have ever witnessed.

As the explorers fashion makeshift boats and navigate treacherous rapids, they encounter the continent’s Indigenous peoples, whose customs, fishing skill and occasional hostility shape each day's progress. Detailed descriptions of swamps, reed‑filled channels and the sudden appearance of a vast lake reveal both the beauty and the hardship of life on the frontier. Throughout, the author records the physical and moral trials of the men, offering a vivid portrait of an era when curiosity and perseverance drove the search for a new world’s secrets.
