Raised in the Ottoman world she later wrote about, she brought readers a rare firsthand view of everyday life among the many communities of nineteenth-century Turkey and the Balkans. Her travel writing and memoirs mix close observation with the perspective of someone who had lived inside that multicultural society for years.
