In the summer of 1833 a determined explorer set out for the highlands of Ethiopia, venturing beyond the second cataract of the Nile into a region few Europeans had ever seen. His journal reads like a vivid travelogue, describing the striking temples, pyramids and other ruins of the ancient kingdom of Meroë that rise from the desert landscape. The author’s fascination with these monuments is matched only by his curiosity about the people who now dwell among them.
Equipped with a camera lucida and guided by an accomplished Italian artist, he produced on‑the‑spot sketches that capture the scale and detail of each structure. The narrative also records the customs, dress and daily life of the various tribes, observing how they have been drawn into the firm grip of Mohammed Ali’s Egyptian administration. These early impressions give listeners a rare glimpse of a culture at a crossroads between tradition and foreign rule.
The volume is complemented by a hand‑drawn map and ninety engraved plates, offering a richly illustrated window onto Ethiopia’s antiquities, its diverse inhabitants and the early nineteenth‑century world they inhabited.
