Description

A learned geographer, fresh from lectures in Berlin and early wanderings across the Mediterranean, feels a sudden pull toward the uncharted heart of Africa after a humble slave’s plea to “go and visit Kanó.” He seizes the chance to join a British‑backed expedition, insisting that the interior’s mysteries become the mission’s prime focus. Through his own financing and a promise of diplomatic support, he prepares for a venture that blends scholarly curiosity with the era’s spirit of exploration.

The narrative follows his trudging caravans across endless deserts where camels serve as steadfast companions and date palms dot the horizon. He records encounters with Arab traders, the generous hospitality of British consuls from Tangier to Tripoli, and the everyday life of peoples rarely seen by Europeans. Interwoven with vivid landscape sketches and thoughtful reflections on colonial ambition, the journal offers listeners a richly textured portrait of a world on the brink of change, all while the explorer balances personal resolve with the practicalities of 19th‑century travel.
