Description

The journal opens with a weary explorer yearning to turn the long, arduous trek homeward as the new year begins. After months navigating the shifting currents of the Niger, the narrator finds himself in a bustling Saharan town where rival merchants and local sheikhs extend tentative greetings, each measured by the ever‑changing political climate. His health, still fragile, improves enough for him to catalogue his dwindling supplies, rediscover a working thermometer, and share a cache of quicksilver that amuses his hosts.

Daily life unfolds through vivid detail: milk and bread at dawn, steaming couscous in the afternoon, and hearty millet stews seasoned with local squash. He notes the cheap market price of pigeon, the rarity of an ostrich egg, and the nightly dishes sent by his protector—often too late to be tasted. Interspersed with these observations are maps and plates that capture the river’s anomalous rise and the intricate layouts of camps and huts, inviting listeners to picture a world both exotic and intimately lived.
