In a near‑future where a newly discovered inert gas called agnoton turns the atmosphere into a lethal allergen, humanity has been reduced to a handful of survivors. Vyrko, a meticulous recorder and amateur poet, lives in a sealed retreat built by the eccentric genius Kirth‑Labbery, the only place where the contaminating gas is kept out by an extraordinary air‑conditioning system. Inside, he chronicles the collapse for future readers while trying to make sense of the tragedy through both stark facts and lyrical verses.
He shares the cramped quarters with Lavra, a bright‑spirited companion whose curiosity constantly draws him out of his solemn routine, and with Tyrsa, whose singing offers brief respite from the oppressive silence. As the three grapple with the knowledge that any step beyond the retreat's filtered air means certain death, Vyrko's dual record becomes a fragile bridge between what was lost and what might be remembered. The story unfolds as they confront ethical dilemmas, cling to fragments of humanity, and wonder whether the sanctuary can truly hold them against a world that has turned hostile.
