Frank Tracy, a self‑made legislator in the quiet town of Shannondale, has built a respectable life around his public duties and the grand house called Tracy Park, though the property technically belongs to his brother Arthur. A telegram announcing Arthur’s unexpected return from Europe throws Frank into a sudden, uneasy scramble: old debts, financial ledgers, and the unspoken expectations of family all surface at once. As he juggles political obligations, a demanding social calendar, and the nervous anticipation of his wife Dora’s reaction, Frank’s composure begins to crack, hinting at deeper fissures beneath his polished exterior.
The story opens on an autumn afternoon when a young messenger brings the terse note that launches the tension, and a brief, seemingly trivial conversation about an ailing grandmother unexpectedly pulls Frank’s thoughts back to his own past. The novel explores how pride, responsibility, and the looming presence of a sibling’s claim can reshape a man’s sense of security, setting the stage for a quietly tense family drama that unfolds in the shadow of a sprawling estate.
