Description

The story opens on a crisp May morning as Roy Leighton, the son of the venerable Arthur and Anna Leighton, sits shivering in the back of a carriage, still nursing a lingering fever. The Leighton Homestead, perched on the Hudson’s rolling hills, looms behind him as a symbol of family honor and lingering mystery. Roy’s mother, Anna, a proud and fair‑haired woman, travels beside him, her dignified bearing hinting at past romances and precarious inheritances that still shape the family’s fortunes.

Into this settled world arrives Edna Browning, a bright and spirited young woman whose letters and gentle courage stir the quiet rhythm of the Leighton estate. As she navigates the expectations of a house built on both love and legal constraints, Edna finds herself drawn into the lives of the Leighton children, especially the earnest Roy. Their early interactions promise a blend of tender affection, hidden anxieties, and the promise of change that will ripple through the homestead’s future.
