Description

When the steamer Hatty finally sighs into the dock at Enterprise, the waiting crowd from the Brock House is relieved but uneasy. The vessel’s delay has sparked nervous gossip, and Tom Hardy—a man whose word commands the local merchants—insists that a mysterious guest be given a berth. As the captain curses the lingering wait, two men step off the boat, the stranger’s presence wrapped in quiet confidence. Their arrival sets the sleepy riverside community on edge, hinting that something beyond the routine has drifted ashore.

Inside the modest stateroom, the newcomer is greeted by a young mulatto lad who hustles him a bundle—Mandy Ann, a servant tied to a nearby household. The stranger’s sharp question about the girl’s ownership spurs a burst of local dialect and the boy’s bitter commentary on class and race, exposing the simmering tensions that run beneath the town’s polite veneer. With each exchanged word, the air grows thicker, suggesting a hidden purpose for the stranger’s journey and a secret that could ripple through the Cromptons’ world.
