Description

An early 20th‑century wanderer leaves the Adriatic ports and winds through the rugged hills of Montenegro, where town squares give way to stone villages perched on terraces. On a steamship turned camp for Herzegovinian families she hears stories of exile, stubborn loyalty and a restless pursuit of freedom, while an Austrian officer offers a blunt, colonial view of the same landscape. The narrative captures a clash of languages, costumes and customs—Catholic, Orthodox and Muslim voices mingle in markets, monasteries and remote passes, painting a living picture of a region on the brink of political change.

In the second part the journey continues into Serbia, from the bustling streets of Belgrade to the quiet sanctuaries of ancient monasteries perched on cliffs. The author describes bustling bazaars, the scent of tobacco and fresh bread, and encounters with peasants, soldiers and traveling gypsies, each episode revealing the resilient spirit of the Balkan peoples. Listeners are invited to hear the cadence of the road, the echo of history and the vivid colors of a land where every stone seems to hold a story.
