Description

In the spring of 1523 a caravan of farmers and traders rolls toward the great Dutch port of Antwerp. Among the wagons is a dusty cart carrying fresh produce, fruit and fragrant flowers, driven by a weary horse and a young boy named Thomas, who is seeing the bustling city for the first time. His father urges him to keep his eyes on the busy streets, the soaring masts and the glittering flags that signal the market’s prosperity. The scene is alive with the clamor of merchants, the ringing of church bells and the scent of new opportunities.

Thomas, a gentle dreamer, is drawn to the splendor of the cathedral’s stained‑glass windows, where the Virgin Mary holds the infant Jesus against a sky‑blue backdrop. The vivid colours and solemn silence stir a quiet wonder within him, contrasting with his father's pragmatic warnings about work and profit. As the early mass concludes, the boy’s thoughts linger on the luminous image, hinting at a deeper curiosity about faith and the world beyond the market’s bustle.
