The narrator opens on a restless 1917, questioning the reliability of facts, systems, and ordinary comforts. In that unsettled mood we meet Jay, a bus conductor whose greatest skill is asking “why?” at every turn. She drifts through the city’s streets with an open mind, refusing to accept the simple moral maxims that most people cling to.

Jay’s estranged family sees her as an idealist—or perhaps a madwoman—but they cannot grasp the secret world she navigates. While guiding passengers along unseen routes, she discovers a hidden “bubble” realm populated by enigmatic Secret Friends, a place where ordinary rules dissolve and curiosity reigns. The early chapters follow her tentative steps into this quiet, interior landscape, hinting at the deeper questions she will pursue without revealing where her journey ultimately leads.
