Description

A lively summer retreat in the Czech spa town of Carlsbad provides the backdrop for a charming encounter between a curious American couple and the enigmatic Burnamy, a local guide whose guarded demeanor hints at hidden stories. As they glide through winding, sun‑kissed streets lined with stuccoed houses and a towering crucifix, the bustling promenade reveals a kaleidoscope of travelers—Germans, Poles, Austrians, Greeks, Russians—each dressed in vivid, cosmopolitan attire. The couple’s eyes wander over glittering shops of silver and glass, while the hotel’s grand rotunda teems with names from every corner of the world, reminding them of both home and far‑off lands.

Amid the elegant bustle, Mrs. March finds herself both amused and slightly wary of Burnamy’s reticence, especially after learning of his mysterious stay in Leipzig. Their shared curiosity about the hotel’s immense scale and the eclectic crowd sets the stage for gentle humor, subtle cultural observations, and the promise of new friendships that may unfold in the heart of this European haven.
