Description

Jack rides into a fledgling prairie settlement, his light buggy trailing a friendly black dog through the dust of Northern Illinois. He is greeted by the rough‑spun Wiggett family, who suspect the newcomer of being a drifter, yet soon learn he is a land surveyor hired to map their future boundaries. The humor of a nervous dog and a wary mother sets a lively tone as Jack steps from his wagon onto the cracked floorboards of the Wiggett log house.

Determined to prove himself, Jack begins the painstaking work of laying out the section corner that will shape the community’s growth, navigating tangled prairie grasses and unpredictable weather. Along the way he befriends a spirited boy named Vinnie, joins a clumsy deer hunt, and confronts the practical puzzles of water supply and makeshift engineering. Their early exploits hint at larger challenges ahead, as the quiet horizon promises both opportunity and unforeseen trials for the young surveyor.
