Description

In the heat of a bustling Ohio rail yard, the clatter of tools and the rhythm of steel tracks set the stage for a hard‑won apprenticeship. Seventeen‑year‑old Allan West arrives on dusty shoes after a long trek, driven by the desperation of a jobless city and the promise of a dollar and a quarter a day. He meets Jack Welsh, the seasoned foreman of Section Twenty‑one, whose rough exterior hides a fair‑hearted Irish spirit willing to give a determined youth a chance.

The opening chapters follow Allan’s first trial on the line: hefting crowbars, tamping gravel, and learning the unforgiving cadence of railroad work. As the gang watches, the boy’s eagerness and raw strength are tested against the relentless demands of the job and the skeptical eye of the road‑master. Amid the sweat, camaraderie begins to form, hinting at the personal growth and loyalty that will shape his life on the rails.
