Description

A sturdy clipper slices through the Indian Ocean, its decks crowded with a kaleidoscope of travelers—generals, judges, newlyweds, and spirited young ladies—all bound for the bustling ports of the East. Captain Lyford, a steady hand and quick mediator, keeps the ship’s temper in check while the sweltering sun fuels petty quarrels among the passengers, especially the jealous whispers of the ladies’ parlors. The voyage is a lively tableau of colonial society, where decorum and desire constantly collide on the rolling tide.

Among the crowd, Miss Violet Ross stands out: a lily‑fair beauty with blue eyes, auburn hair, and a gentle, principled spirit that draws the quiet admiration of even the most indifferent officers. Yet a mysterious young man named Reginald Hamerton, whose polished manners and fluency in Hindustani set him apart from ordinary sailors, begins to stir curiosity and subtle tension. As the ship nears the Hooghly, the stage is set for alliances, misunderstandings, and the first sparks of an adventure that promises to test both heart and honor.
