Description

A weary journalist finds himself thrust into the hustle of a struggling weekly, where the new editor, Mr. Pinhorn, pushes for fresh, sensational material. The narrator, still fresh from the shadow of his predecessor, sees an opportunity in the reclusive literary figure Neil Paraday, whose private life hints at untapped intrigue. With office politics and the lingering memory of the former boss adding tension, he sets his sights on turning Paraday’s secrecy into a headline.

Soon the reporter is dispatched to interview a parade of social characters—from the flamboyant Miss Braby returning from America to the aristocratic Lord Crouchley and a divorce‑troubled Mrs. Bounder in Brighton. Each encounter promises a glimpse into the private dramas that fuel the paper’s survival. As he navigates gossip, ambition, and the delicate balance between public appetite and personal privacy, the story unfolds into a portrait of a man eager to make his mark while wrestling with the ethics of his craft.
