Description

In a noisy New York harbor, a desperate ship’s officer scrambles to fill the crew of the steamship Domus before the tide costs the owner thousands. He gathers a motley group—two newly‑signed men of color, a Spaniard, and a gaunt, half‑asleep laborer named Hiram Strong—while the narrator, Ben Taylor, signs on as a fireman. The atmosphere is gritty and urgent, the dockside smells mixing with the clamor of whistles and engines, and each new hand seems to carry a hidden story.

The vessel pulls away, its deck crowded with weary strangers whose fates are now linked by a single contract. As the Domus heads toward an unnamed Gulf port, the narrator observes the fragile health of Strong and the uneasy camaraderie among the crew. Beneath the routine of coal‑stoking and navigation, hints of danger and secret motives begin to surface, promising an adventure that will test loyalty and uncover the mysteries hidden in the ship’s cargo and its passengers.
