Description

Four American astronauts find themselves stranded in a fragile lunar dome while a Soviet‑run underground blast looms overhead. Their cramped suits and failing equipment turn a routine mission into a tense waiting game, as static‑filled radios and language barriers make every exchange a gamble. The silent, stark moonscape outside only heightens the pressure, while the men argue, joke, and confront their own fears as the countdown ticks toward an unknown outcome.

Inside the dome, the crew wrestles with dwindling power, rising sweat, and the ever‑present threat of a catastrophic collapse. As the blast finally erupts, the ground shudders and their communications sputter, leaving them to wonder whether the structure will hold and if they’ll ever hear a clear voice again. The story captures a fragile moment of Cold‑War rivalry turned personal survival, blending hard‑science detail with the raw nerves of men on the edge of the void.

About the author

Kris Neville

Kris Neville

1925–1980

A sharp, underappreciated voice from mid-century science fiction, this writer earned lasting admiration for stories that were witty, inventive, and a little offbeat. Best known for the novella Bettyann, he built an early reputation in the magazines before largely stepping away from fiction.
