Coxe, a pragmatic shopper, snaps up a deeply discounted, copper‑finished refrigerator that promises a massive freezing compartment. Within days a mysterious package of fish eggs shows up among his ice cubes, and the curious find quickly becomes a breakfast habit for him and his girlfriend. Their experiments with the endlessly replenishing eggs turn ordinary mornings into a quirky logistical puzzle.
As the eggs multiply, the couple tries to share the surplus with friends, neighbors and even the landlady, only to watch the supply grow faster than they can distribute. Their light‑hearted attempts at “egg diplomacy” highlight a surreal blend of domestic routine and inexplicable abundance, while Coxe keeps a cautious eye on the freezer’s baffling output.
Just when the last package disappears, a bandaged stranger arrives at Coxe’s door, claiming the refrigerator was a mistaken shipment and hinting at a far larger problem. The encounter leaves listeners wondering what hidden purpose the appliance really serves.

A sharp, underappreciated voice from mid-century science fiction, this writer earned lasting admiration for stories that were witty, inventive, and a little offbeat. Best known for the novella Bettyann, he built an early reputation in the magazines before largely stepping away from fiction.
