An alien scout named Parr touches down on Earth, not as a conqueror in full force but as the quiet advance guard for a forthcoming invasion. His orders are simple yet unsettling: make sure every human receives a specially marked parcel that will soon be mailed across the planet. Clad in a perfectly ordinary suit and equipped with a concealed anti‑gravity pack, he steps onto a Los Angeles street and immediately begins to blend in, even lighting a cigar to mask his alien nature.
Parr’s first real test comes aboard a city bus, where he must pay the fare with counterfeit coins and hand over a mysterious red slip that the driver treats like a receipt. As the vehicle rolls through the night, he watches the passengers, listening for thoughts and trying to establish a mental link with his distant comrades. The scene captures the tension between his cold, methodical mission and the bewildering, noisy humanity surrounding him, hinting at a larger plan that could reshape the world.

1925–1980
A sharp, underappreciated voice from mid-century science fiction, this writer earned lasting admiration for stories that were witty, inventive, and a little offbeat. Best known for the novella Bettyann, he built an early reputation in the magazines before largely stepping away from fiction.
