Description

In a cramped West Kensington flat, newlyweds Audrey and Gerard Angmering try to stitch together a modest life amid the clatter of noisy neighbours and the thin walls of a “mansion” they can barely afford. Their domestic routine is shattered when Gerard receives a chilling summons from the bank: three forged cheques have been traced to the account of the irascible Sir Richmond Hornthwaite, and all fingers point at him. Audrey’s fierce devotion battles a rising tide of doubt, as she watches her husband crumble under the weight of an accusation that could ruin their fragile future.

Against the backdrop of early‑1900s London, the couple’s love is tested by a mystery that intertwines financial peril, social expectations, and the shadow of an older patron whose favors are as unpredictable as they are powerful. As whispers of scandal swirl through their narrow hallway, Gerard wrestles with shame and desperation, while Audrey’s fiery spirit refuses to accept a verdict without a fight. The opening of the story sets a tense, intimate stage where loyalty and truth must navigate the treacherous currents of reputation and debt.

Florence Warden

1857–1929

Best known for sensation novels full of secrets, disguises, and gothic turns, this English writer also spent time on the stage before devoting herself to fiction. Her work was hugely popular with late-Victorian readers and still has the page-turning pull of classic popular suspense.
