Florence Warden

1857–1929

Best known for sensation novels full of secrets, disguises, and gothic turns, this English writer also spent time on the stage before devoting herself to fiction. Her work was hugely popular with late-Victorian readers and still has the page-turning pull of classic popular suspense.

About the author

Born Florence Alice Price on May 16, 1857, she wrote under the name Florence Warden and later became Mrs. G. E. James. Reliable reference sources describe her as an English actress, novelist, and playwright, and note that she was born at Hanworth, Middlesex and educated in Brighton and in France.

Warden found early success with The House on the Marsh, the novel most often singled out as the book that made her name. She went on to write a large number of novels, many of them mysteries or sensation fiction, building a reputation for dramatic plots, hidden motives, and strong doses of suspense.

She continued to be remembered both as a prolific popular author and as a figure connected to the theatrical world she came from. Florence Warden died on May 11, 1929.
