Description

A nine‑year‑old cobbler’s son named Tommy Stubbins spends his days perched on the old stone bridge over Puddleby’s river, listening to sailors’ shanties and dreaming of distant seas. He befriends a crafty mussel‑man who teaches him to build kites from umbrellas and paddle out to the marsh for lobsters, all while the river’s ships loom like gentle giants in the sunset. Tommy’s imagination is fueled by the sights and sounds of the bustling waterfront, and his longing for adventure grows with every sail that disappears beyond the bend.

When the eccentric Doctor Dolittle arrives in town, his astonishing talent for conversing with animals draws Tommy into a world far beyond the marshes. Together with a chorus of talking creatures, they embark on voyages that promise wonder, friendship, and the chance to discover the secrets of nature. The early chapters capture the thrill of setting out, the charm of countryside life, and the beginning of a remarkable partnership that will carry them across continents.
