Description

A handful of eager boys—Sam, Jimmy, Ed and their friends—join the retired seaman Captain Bannister for a modest river cruise aboard the newly‑named Hoppergrass. The little white cat‑boat, painted with gilt letters, slips out of the mist‑shrouded harbor at dawn, its deck already humming with the chatter of strangers who keep hopping aboard. As the river glides past sleepy towns and smokey chimneys, the crew discovers the simple pleasures of shared meals, daring banter, and the peculiar quirks of a captain whose “sea‑legs” are as legendary as his bow‑shaped stance.

Their journey quickly turns into a rite of passage, where youthful imagination collides with the practical challenges of life on the water. With each unexpected passenger and every sunrise over the rippling tide, the boys learn friendship, responsibility, and a touch of the adventurous spirit that only a river voyage can stir. The story captures the charm of early‑twentieth‑century small‑town life while setting the stage for the larger escapades that lie ahead.

A librarian turned storyteller, he helped shape early true crime with witty, skeptical books about famous murders and courtroom legends. His writing often mixed careful research with a dry, readable style that still feels modern.
