Description

A sprawling Victorian household forms the heart of this tale, centered on the deaf yet kindly Mr. Mohun and his brood of orphaned children. The elder sisters each shoulder different roles—one dutifully married off to India, another dreamy and romantic—while the younger brothers, Maurice and Reginald, stir up mischief under the watchful eye of the sensible eight‑year‑old Phyllis. Their lives intertwine with the charismatic Lord Rotherwood, a ward of the family, and a circle of friends whose loyalties and affections shape the household’s everyday dramas.

The story opens in a modest London dining‑room, where a teenage girl sits beside her scholarly father, both absorbed in papers and quiet anxieties. Her restless curiosity and the faint glow of her thoughts hint at the inner conflicts that will guide her choices. As duties clash with emerging desires, the novel gently explores how love, responsibility, and youthful energy can both unsettle and restore a family’s fragile equilibrium.
