Description

Walter Henderson, a restless young man forced into a quiet clerkship at the British Museum, longs for a life of action after a thwarted army career. When his uncle, a devoted Babylonian scholar, sees his frustration, he offers Walter a chance to leave the archives for a six‑month expedition to the heart of ancient Mesopotamia. The proposition demands that he master cuneiform and Arabic before joining a field team that hopes to pick up where the great excavators left off.

Leaving England behind, Walter journeys across deserts and river towns, where colorful caravans and local legends hint at a forgotten hoard along the Tigris. Early encounters with curious sheikhs, ancient seals, and a mysterious fire‑priestess draw him deeper into a puzzle that blends scholarship with danger. Illustrated with vivid colour plates, the tale offers listeners a rich portrait of early‑20th‑century archaeology and the restless spirit that drives a boy toward a treasure beyond gold.
