"THE TOLL-HOUSE"
At the Three Feathers Inn, four companions—Jack, Meagle, Lester and White—turn a casual evening of tea into a wager about the infamous Toll‑House, a cheap rental reputed to claim the lives of every caretaker who dwells within. Skeptical yet intrigued, they trade stories of ghosts and misfortune, and finally agree to spend a night alone in the deserted manor to settle the debate. Their banter masks a growing unease as the landlord recounts the grim fate of a tramp found hanging from the balusters, warning them that the house’s name is no idle rumor.
The foursome sets off under a moonless sky, the road winding through dark hedgerows and a foreboding wood that swallows their footsteps. With only a couple of candles and a handful of provisions, they confront a landscape that feels both remote and charged with unseen presence. As they draw nearer, the air thickens with the promise of creaking shutters, distant whispers, and the lingering question of whether the Toll‑House will finally reveal its secret.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
