Description

A young private tutor arrives at the ancient Thorpe Place, a sprawling estate rooted in the stone‑laden heart of the English Midlands. The house, half‑ruined and half‑modern, exudes a chill that seems to seep from its crumbling plaster, yet its garden bursts with roses and the promise of domestic comfort. As he settles into his new role, he observes the stark contrast between the gloomy, towering walls and the bright, orderly wing where the family dwells.

He quickly becomes part of a small household that includes the spirited governess Miss Witherton, the diligent housekeeper Mrs. Stevens, and the stoic steward Mr. Richards. Their employer, Sir John Bollamore, is a towering, enigmatic figure whose daily routines are as rigid as the stone corridors he haunts. The tutor finds himself drawn to the quiet charms of the children and the governess, while the atmosphere of the manor hints at hidden stories waiting to surface.

The opening chapters weave a vivid portrait of country life, lingering mysteries, and the subtle stirrings of affection, setting the stage for a tale where the past of the house may soon intertwine with the futures of those who live within its walls.
