Description

A small gathering in the elegant dining room of Fanfaro’s house sets the stage for a tale of daring rides and shadowed forests. While Spero, the son of the legendary Monte‑Cristo, sleeps nearby, his companions—Miss Clary, Madame Caraman, Coucou, Albert de Morcerf, and the seasoned Fanfaro himself—listen as the story unfolds, beginning with a solitary rider named Pierre Labarre braving the bleak winter night of the Black Forest.

Pierre, a trusted servant on a secret mission, pushes his horse through a storm‑laden path toward Freiburg, haunted by the distant clatter of hooves and the whisper of unseen pursuers. When a mysterious rider darts past and a sudden gunshot wounds him, Pierre’s suspicion of a hidden bandit grows, hinting at old legends of forest spectres and a possible betrayal among familiar faces. The tension of the chase and the looming danger promise further intrigue as the narrative moves toward a bustling inn in the Vosges, where new travelers await.

About the author

Jules Lermina

Jules Lermina

1839–1915

A restless, prolific voice in 19th-century French popular fiction, he moved easily from journalism and political controversy to adventure stories, mysteries, and early speculative tales. His life carried as much drama as his novels, including prison terms for his socialist activism and public support from Victor Hugo.
