Description

Paris in the summer of 1829 is a glittering stage for a stranger whose name alone—Monte‑Christo—stirs every salon. Wealthy, enigmatic, and seemingly untouchable, he commands the attention of financiers, aristocrats, and the fashionable youth who orbit his lavish villa at Auteuil. His presence turns ordinary gatherings into spectacles, and rumors about his origins and motives ripple through the city like gossip on a summer breeze.

Amid this fervor, the affluent Danglars family prepares to bind their only daughter, Eugenie, to the handsome Count Andrea Cavalcanti. The evening of the marriage contract is a tableau of silk, candles, and polished ambition, drawing the era’s most influential figures to witness the alliance. When Monte‑Christo finally appears, the room erupts, and his inscrutable stare hints at a deeper game—one that may involve secrets far beyond a simple matrimonial bargain.

About the author

Jules Lermina

Jules Lermina

1839–1915

A restless, prolific voice in 19th-century French popular fiction, he moved easily from journalism and political controversy to adventure stories, mysteries, and early speculative tales. His life carried as much drama as his novels, including prison terms for his socialist activism and public support from Victor Hugo.
