THE SLANDERER
At a lively wedding feast, schoolteacher Sergey Akhineyev slips into the kitchen to inspect the evening’s grand centerpiece: a magnificent sturgeon. His delight at the fish produces an unfortunate lip-smacking sound just as a mischievous colleague appears, jokes that Akhineyev has been kissing the cook, and disappears before the embarrassed host can set the record straight.
Determined to protect his reputation, Akhineyev begins explaining the incident to one guest after another. Each retelling is meant to expose the joke as foolish gossip, but his anxious insistence only gives the rumor a larger audience and a life of its own. Set amid noisy celebrations, social scrutiny, and escalating misunderstanding, this witty story captures how quickly an innocent moment can become a scandal—and how badly people can worsen matters when they try too hard to control what others think.
