Description

A weather‑worn half‑breed named Ignace Pelott, once a storyteller of the Great Lakes, now hauls a birch‑sled and a pair of dogs across the treacherous ice of the strait. He is tasked with getting Mamselle Rosalin of Green Bay from Mackinac to Cheboygan in late March, despite the wind’s sudden turn and the thin, “rotten” ice that threatens to give way at any moment. Their urgent mission—delivering a sick officer’s wife—adds a human urgency to the harsh northern wilderness.

As they glide between Round Island and Boblo, the sledge’s wheels splinter the fragile surface and a sudden crack splits the silence. In the fading light Ignace spots a lone skeleton gliding down the island’s shoreline, a quiet reminder of the lake’s hidden past. The eerie sight heightens the tension, leaving listeners to wonder whether the ice will hold long enough for the desperate journey to succeed.
