Description

Jean Lozier stands on a windswept bluff, his eyes fixed on the bustling river town of Kaskaskia, a place that feels both distant and intimately familiar. From his perch he watches the daily rhythm of the Mississippi—trading vessels, bustling wharves, and the glow of lanterns spilling from the streets and the parish church. The landscape of pine‑lined roads, stone bridges and the ancient fort’s crumbling earthworks frames his restless yearning for a life beyond the fields that have shaped him.

Through Jean’s quiet reverie the novel paints a vivid portrait of early‑19th‑century frontier life, where French‑Canadian settlers, loyalists, and Native voices mingle in a tapestry of music, market gossip, and whispered legends. As the sun sets and the bell of the Immaculate Conception rings across the water, his longing deepens, setting the stage for the choices that will pull him toward the town he has only ever admired from afar.
