Description

A young woman of Italian heritage, Carmela Rosselli, has grown up between the aristocratic salons of Florence and the polished corridors of Washington, D.C. Orphaned at fifteen, she was raised by a close cousin and later entered the society circles that orbit the White House. Restless and world‑weary at twenty‑five, she narrates her own story with frank honesty, aware of the flaws that colour every human heart.

When her confidante Ulrica Yorke declares a need for a radical change, the two set sail for Europe, trading the familiar soot of Washington for the fog of London, the glitter of Monte Carlo, and the ancient pulse of Rome. The journey promises fresh scenery and the chance to rebuild broken spirits, yet dark undercurrents hint that past sins may follow them across the continent. As they mingle with diplomats, expatriates, and strangers whose charms mask hidden motives, Carmela must navigate a glittering yet unpredictable social tapestry while confronting both external intrigues and the lingering shadows of her own heart.

A master of early spy thrillers, he turned invasion fears, secret plots, and international intrigue into hugely popular fiction. His life as a journalist, traveler, and tireless self-promoter was almost as dramatic as his books.
