CHAPTER V ON THE RUSSIAN FRONTIER
A restless British officer with a taste for daring exploits, Paul Cressingham is as comfortable in a ballroom as he is under a pine canopy. Though his reputation as a dashing swordsman and a favorite among the ladies of Corfu precedes him, he grows weary of routine drills and seeks the untamed wilds of Dalmatia. His uncle, the stern Colonel Graysteel, reluctantly grants him leave, wary of the bandits that haunt the rugged mountains.
Setting sail on the Austrian steamer Metternich, Paul heads for the coastal city of Zara, intent on discovering adventure beyond the familiar seas. The remote Dalmatian landscape promises both natural beauty and hidden peril, as whispers of a shadowy presence tied to a distant czar begin to surface. As he steps onto foreign ground, the captain’s longing for action draws him into a web of intrigue that could test his skill, courage, and the very loyalty of those he trusts.
