Description

A self‑reflective memoir follows a restless intellect who begins life among dissenting circles in Liverpool, works as a clerk, and then seeks holy orders from the Bishop of Llandaff. Ordained as a chaplain, he yet clings to radical acquaintances—French‑inspired writers and members of the infamous Corresponding Society—while publishing sermons, essays, and a popular theological translation that attracts the attention of senior clergy. His fortunes shift when a renowned prelate notices his work, prompting a careful retreat from radical politics, a marriage to a steadfast Dissenter, and a backstage role in confidential government service that eventually secures his independence.

The narrative also sketches the contradictions of his contemporary, a flamboyant, sharp‑tongued figure celebrated for wit and learning yet prone to biting sarcasm. Through lively anecdotes and candid confession, the author reveals how literary ambition, shifting loyalties, and fortunate patronage shape a career that straddles the worlds of religious duty and the bustling literary market of early‑19th‑century England.
