The Return
As the war ends, the Rodman family eagerly resumes its comfortable routines. Mary has returned to her old domestic work, the house has a new Persian rug, and everyone speaks hopefully of getting back to “the way things were.” Yet beneath the cheerful talk, old tensions remain. Grace cannot forget that her brother Stephen gave up everything to serve, while the family’s wealthy future son-in-law stayed home to manage his factory and increase his fortune.
Stephen’s return is anticipated with both affection and unease. His grandfather longs to see him, but the others are already imagining a practical future for him—steady work, obedience, and a quiet place in the family order. Grace alone wonders whether a man changed by war can, or should, simply step back into the life he left behind. This thoughtful short story explores the difficult homecoming of a veteran and the hidden costs of returning to a world that has barely learned anything from the conflict.
