Description

In the quiet village where St. Mark’s stands, a newly ordained rector finds his weeks filled with sermons, pastoral duties, and an unexpected ache in his heart. While he strives to be a diligent shepherd for his flock, his thoughts repeatedly drift to Anna Ruthven, the choir’s luminous soprano, whose brown eyes seem to linger on the pulpit whenever the organ curtain rises. The rector’s devotion to his calling clashes with a growing, private longing that he battles in secret, even scribbling forbidden verses on stray paper before hastily shredding them.

A letter from an old college friend adds another layer of complication, hinting at summer plans that could bring Anna into closer contact with the affluent Thornton Hastings—a match that promises social advantage but threatens the rector’s inner turmoil. As the season approaches, the young clergyman must navigate the delicate balance between his vows, his community’s expectations, and the tender pull of a love that feels both forbidden and inevitable.
