A lone operative known only as the Raider touches down on a remote colony world, his ship disappearing in a flash of defense fire over the capital, Thanlar. Disguised in the simple garb of a local farmer, he slips into the quiet valley village, his purpose hidden beneath the routine of daily life. The stark landscape and the distant towers of the capital remind him why his mission matters, even as his past as a hunter for a cause beyond ordinary law haunts his thoughts.
In the village’s modest tailor shop he asks for a gray hunting cloak, a request that draws the shopkeeper’s wary attention. The brief exchange hints at a dangerous quarry—a jackal from the Raider’s home planet—while the mention of the powerful Earth Commissioner looms over the conversation. As he secures the cloak, the tension between his secret orders and the colony’s uneasy peace begins to surface, setting the stage for a perilous pursuit that could test both his loyalty and his survival.

Best known for a striking trilogy set in the early Oregon Country, this American novelist and artist wrote historical fiction that feels rugged, thoughtful, and deeply rooted in place. His work helped make the Oregon coast and its early settlers vivid for generations of readers.
