Description

A scholarly examination of the ancient Greek stories that personify clouds, storms and the very breath of the sky, this work treats Athena as the “queen of the air.” Drawing on a lecture delivered at University College, London, the author weaves together literary analysis, archaeological insight and the latest scientific ideas about ether and the blue of the heavens. The first section sets the mythic scene, while the following parts explore how the goddess’s attributes echo modern understandings of atmospheric phenomena.

The author’s personal preface adds a human touch, recalling decades of field work and the changing state of the Alpine landscapes that inspired his study. He argues that recent physics validates many symbolic elements long taken for granted in myth, such as the divine quality of the sky’s color and the notion of a pervasive celestial medium. Readers who enjoy tracing the dialogue between ancient imagination and contemporary science will find the book both informative and thought‑provoking.
